Dr. Gloria Houston is a native of Spruce Pine, North Carolina and is known throughout
the United States as an educator and author of children's and young adult books.
During the Town Meetings, students will be able to ask the author questions about her
writings and life as a North Carolina author.
Students are encouraged to read books by Dr. Houston before the meeting. Classes are
encouraged to discuss the books and create questions that they would like to ask the
author. Teaching resources can be found on her Internet site.

Dr. Gloria Houston
A
native of Spruce Pine, NC, Dr. Gloria Houston is widely known as an educator and
children's author. Her award-winning books, set in the Appalachian Mountains of North
Carolina, often feature stories from the lives of her family members. The Year of the
Perfect Christmas Tree was on Publisher's Weekly 1988 Best Seller List, the
International Reading Association's Teacher's Choices List, and ACE's Best Books of 1988
List; it was also a nominee for the 1993 N.C. Children's Book Award. Her young adult novel
Littlejim was also selected for the IRA Teacher's Choices List.
Other works include Littlejim's Gift (1994) and My Great-Aunt Arizona
(1992). Dr. Houston also created IBM's "Tell Me a Story," winner of the National
Literacy Award from Partnerships in Education.
