Biographical Information:
Elizabeth Dole was born in Salisbury, NC in 1936. After graduating
high school, Elizabeth Dole attended Duke University. Being urged to
study home economics by her mother, Elizabeth chose to study political
science. She graduated with honors in 1958 after becoming student
body president. Her post graduate work was completed at Harvard
before entering the Law School in 1962. After graduating in 1965,
Elizabeth moved to Washington, DC and landed a job at the Department of
Health, Education, and Welfare.
Elizabeth worked on behalf of poor clients in 1967 and became part of the
Consumer Affairs during the Lyndon B. Johnson's term in office. She
continued her work in the political arena with Richard Nixon before
marrying Bob Dole in 1975. This union created one of the most
powerful political couples in Washington.
Elizabeth has always been a religious person. She received
Churchwomen of the Year honors by Religious Heritage of America. She
was also named Christian Woman of the Year by the Christian Woman of the
Year Association. Both of these awards were presented to her during
1995.
After taking a year and a
half off to help her husband campaign for presidency, Elizabeth has kept
low profile until her announcement to run for the Senate in 2002.
