Biographical Information: George Vanderbilt was born in 1862. Vanderbilt was raised in an extremely wealthy family during the Victorian age. His grandfather and father made a fortune in the shipping and railroad industries. Vanderbilt was interested in forestry in college. He built the famous Biltmore House near Asheville, North Carolina. Here he conducted agriculture and forestry experiments. George married Edith Stuyvesan in 1898. They went to Europe for their honeymoon and then returned to the Biltmore Estate to live. There, they had their only child Cornelia Vanderbilt. George Vanderbilt opened his estate on Christmas Eve of 1895. It was amazing. The mansion had 250 rooms. There were 34 master bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, 3 kitchens, an indoor pool, and 65 fireplaces. The estate provided people who stayed there food, fun, and warmth. Biltmore Estate is truly one of America's treasures! The vision of the wealthy George Washington Vanderbilt, this luxurious home and working estate is unique in many respects. Not only is there the 250 room mansion full of rare antiques and works of art, but also fabulous gardens and an award-winning winery.
