Biographical Information: Dolly is one of the best known first ladies. She was raised Quaker and in that faith, she married John Todd. Her first husband died three years later leaving Dolly was a son. Four years later she married James Madison. James was quite a bit older than Dolly, but they had a wonderful marriage. Dolly was first lady during the war of 1812. On August 23, 1814 the British set fire to the White House. Dolly wrote an account of this frightening event to her sister - "The Burning of Washington" http://www.nationalcenter.org/WashingtonBurning1814.html One of Washington D.C.'s famous events for children was originated by Mrs. Madison. Each spring the Washington area children get to partake in the annual Easter Egg Hunt. | |
